The CTS is made by General Motors for the Cadillac brand. It is a mid size entry level, luxury car. It became the replacement for the Cadillac Catera in 2003. The Catera and the Allante were the first cars that Cadillac made to entice younger buyers. Although they tried to capture a younger buyer base in the 1990s with the Catera and the Allante, the CTS was the first of these new models that was successful. The CTS was introduced in 2002 for the 2003 model year, and rode on the new rear-wheel drive GM Sigma platform. It was a return to rear-wheel drive, as well as being the first Cadillac with a manual transmission since the 1988 Cimarron. The CTS was nominated for the North American Car of the Year award for 2002. It is built at GM's Lansing Grand River plant in Lansing, Michigan.

Originally powered by a 3.2 L LA3 V6 producing 220 hp (164 kW), the CTS received a 3.6 L DOHC V6 with variable valve timing in 2004, producing 255 hp and 252 ft-lb’s of torque. The 3.2 L engine went out of production in 2005, when a new 2.8 L version of the DOHC V6 debuted in an entry-level version of the CTS. In Europe, the 2.8 L replaces the previous entry level 2.6 L. The CTS initially offered either a 5-speed 5L40-E automatic transmission or 5-speed GETRAG 260 manual transmission. The GETRAG was replaced with an Aisin AY-6 6-speed for 2005.

The Cadillac CTS-V is a model in Cadillac's V-Series line of high performance vehicles. It was introduced in 2004 to compete with other sports sedans such as the BMW M3 and M5 models, as well as the Mercedes-Benz C55 AMG and E55 AMG. It is an extension of the CTS sedan, and is enhanced with GM performance parts like the 5.7-liter LS6 V8 from the C5-generation Chevrolet Corvette Z06, as well as the Corvette Z06's six-speed manual Tremec transmission. From 2006 onwards, the LS6 engine was superseded by the new LS2 engine as used in the base 2006 Chevrolet Corvette. The CTS-V has a track ready suspension, and eighteen-inch wheels with Z-rated Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar run-flat tires. It also features unique front and rear treatments, including mess grilles over the front openings of the car.
